Smuggling Alcohol on a Cruise

This is the second most asked question by people looking to book (usually their second) cruise. The first thing I would like to say is that you do so at your own risk. The second thing I would like to say is that with the cost on board, I understand. Here are some tips, gathered from different sources, on the the best things you can do to be successful.

  • Pack it in your CHECKED luggage. Carry on luggage is scrutinized much more.
  • Wrap in bubble wrap, and then put in sealed bags. We all know how our luggage is handled when not in our possession.
  • Smaller bottles travel and hide better. Cordials and 5ths for example.
  • Don't try to take more than you need. To much can lead to being found easier.
  • Spread the wealth. If you have more than one checked bag, or traveling in a group, spread out the bottles so there is a better chance of it all not being found and confiscated.

Every cruise line handles this differently, but if you are caught, be prepared to either be asked to dispose of (take back to car, toss etc...) or have it confiscated and returned at the end of the cruise. Trying to sneak alcohol back on board from a port of call is different, but you are allowed to bring it back and have it kept for you until the end of the cruise.

Another note: A comment left on my first post that just warned of bringing alcohol on board, stated that Disney does not have a problem with you bringing your own on board.
